The refractory period — the interval after ejaculation during which another erection isn't possible — is one of the most misunderstood aspects of male sexual physiology. Some men take PDE5 inhibitors specifically hoping to shorten it. Here's what the biology and the evidence actually support.

Studies show refractory period shortening of approximately 10–30% with PDE5 inhibitor use. This is measurable but not dramatic. A man with a natural 30-minute refractory period might see it shorten to 20–25 minutes. A man with a 2-hour refractory period might see it shorten to 90 minutes.
Age and the Refractory Period
The age-related extension of the refractory period is one of the most consistent findings in sexual medicine research. It's driven by the same neurochemical and hormonal changes that contribute to age-related ED: declining testosterone, reduced NO synthase activity, and altered neuronal responsiveness.
PDE5 inhibitors don't reverse the aging-related extension — they provide a modest shortening within the context of your age-related baseline.
Realistic Expectations
If you're taking PDE5 inhibitors primarily to enable "round two," adjust expectations:
- In your 20s–30s: the medication may shorten an already-short refractory period, but you may not need it for this purpose
- In your 40s–50s: the medication may help you recover more quickly, but multiple-hour refractory periods won't shrink to minutes
